About This Tool

The Appliance Energy Calculator helps you figure out how much it costs to run your household appliances. From refrigerators and washing machines to space heaters and gaming PCs, every device adds to your electric bill. This tool uses the appliance's wattage, hours of use per day, and your electricity rate to calculate daily, monthly, and yearly costs. It's perfect for identifying energy hogs, deciding whether to replace an old appliance, or comparing the cost of running different models. Many people use it to settle debates (like 'does leaving a computer on cost a lot?') or to budget for high-usage seasons. Getting specific numbers helps you prioritize energy-saving upgrades that actually pay off.

How It Works

The calculator uses the formula: Cost = (Wattage × Hours used per day × Days used per period) / 1000 × Cost per kWh. First, convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1000. Then multiply by hours and rate. For example, a 1,500 W space heater used 8 hours/day for 30 days: (1,500 × 8 × 30) / 1000 = 360 kWh. At $0.12/kWh, cost = 360 × 0.12 = $43.20 per month.

Examples

  • Example 1: A 200 W refrigerator runs 24/7 (730 hours/month). Energy = (200 × 730) / 1000 = 146 kWh. At $0.14/kWh, monthly cost = $20.44.
  • Example 2: A 1,200 W microwave used 15 minutes/day (0.25 hours) for 30 days. Energy = (1,200 × 0.25 × 30) / 1000 = 9 kWh. At $0.12/kWh, monthly cost = $1.08.

Pro Tips

  • Check the appliance's nameplate for actual wattage (not just the 'rated' value) as it may vary by setting.
  • For appliances with motors (like fridges), use the 'running wattage' not the startup wattage for continuous use estimates.
  • Use a plug-in power meter (like Kill-A-Watt) for the most accurate reading, especially for devices with variable power draw.
