About This Tool

The Raise Calculator is a practical tool for employees and employers to understand the financial impact of a salary increase. Whether you are negotiating a raise, evaluating a job offer, or planning your company's payroll budget, this calculator quickly shows your new salary, the dollar amount of the increase, and the percentage change. It can handle both percentage raises (e.g., a 5% increase) and flat dollar raises (e.g., a $2,000 increase). This is valuable for personal financial planning, such as determining how much more you can save or spend each month. For managers, it helps communicate the value of a raise to team members. It also clarifies the difference between a cost-of-living adjustment and a merit-based raise.

How It Works

The Raise Calculator uses two main formulas. For a percentage raise: New Salary = Current Salary × (1 + Raise Percentage / 100). Raise Amount = New Salary – Current Salary. For a flat dollar raise: New Salary = Current Salary + Raise Amount. Raise Percentage = (Raise Amount / Current Salary) × 100. For example, a $50,000 salary with a 5% raise gives a new salary of $52,500 and a raise amount of $2,500.

Examples

  • An employee currently earning $45,000 receives a 6% raise. New salary = $45,000 × 1.06 = $47,700. The raise amount is $2,700.
  • A worker gets a flat $3,000 raise on a $60,000 salary. New salary = $63,000. The raise percentage = ($3,000 / $60,000) × 100 = 5%.

Pro Tips

  • When negotiating, ask for a percentage raise rather than a flat amount if you want your raise to scale with future increases.
  • Consider the impact on taxes—a raise may push you into a higher tax bracket, but only the income in that bracket is taxed at the higher rate.
  • Use the calculator to compare the raise against inflation to see if your purchasing power is actually increasing.
