About This Tool

The Fraction Calculator is a powerful tool for performing arithmetic operations on fractions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Fractions represent parts of a whole and are fundamental in mathematics, cooking, construction, and many other fields. Manually adding or subtracting fractions often requires finding a common denominator, which can be time-consuming and error-prone. This calculator simplifies the process by instantly computing the result in its simplest form. Common use cases include adjusting recipe ingredients (e.g., halving a recipe that calls for 3/4 cup of sugar), solving math homework problems, dividing land or materials into equal parts, and converting measurements in woodworking or sewing. Whether you're a student learning fractions or a professional needing quick calculations, this tool saves time and ensures accuracy.

How It Works

For addition and subtraction, the calculator first finds the least common denominator (LCD) of the two fractions. Then it adjusts the numerators accordingly and performs the operation. For example, 1/3 + 1/4 = (4/12 + 3/12) = 7/12. For multiplication, it multiplies numerators together and denominators together: (a/b) × (c/d) = (a×c)/(b×d). For division, it multiplies the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second: (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a×d)/(b×c). The result is then simplified by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).

Examples

  • You need to add 2/5 cup of oil and 3/10 cup of vinegar for a dressing. The calculator gives 2/5 + 3/10 = 4/10 + 3/10 = 7/10 cup total.
  • A recipe for 4 servings uses 3/4 cup of flour, but you only want 2 servings. Multiply 3/4 by 1/2: 3/4 × 1/2 = 3/8 cup of flour.

Pro Tips

  • Always simplify your final fraction—the calculator does this automatically, but it's good practice to check.
  • When dividing fractions, remember to flip the second fraction (find its reciprocal) before multiplying.
  • For mixed numbers, convert them to improper fractions first for easier calculation.
