About This Tool

The Ratio Calculator is a practical tool for simplifying ratios and finding missing values in proportions. Ratios compare two or more quantities and are widely used in finance, cooking, engineering, and everyday decision-making. For instance, you might need to mix paint in a specific ratio, determine the correct gear ratio for a bicycle, or scale a recipe up or down. This calculator can simplify a ratio like 12:8 to 3:2 by dividing both terms by their greatest common factor. It can also solve for an unknown value in a proportion (e.g., if 2:5 = x:20, find x). This eliminates guesswork and ensures consistency in mixtures, dilutions, and scaling tasks. It’s an invaluable tool for students, DIY enthusiasts, and professionals who work with proportional relationships.

How It Works

To simplify a ratio, the calculator finds the greatest common divisor (GCD) of both numbers and divides each term by that GCD. For example, 18:24 becomes 3:4 after dividing by 6. To find a missing value in a proportion (a:b = c:d), it uses cross-multiplication: a × d = b × c. If the missing value is d, then d = (b × c) / a. The tool checks for valid input and outputs the simplified ratio or the solved missing term instantly.

Examples

  • You need to mix concrete with a ratio of 3 parts cement to 5 parts sand. If you have 15 buckets of sand, how much cement? Using the proportion 3:5 = x:15, cross-multiply: 3×15 = 5x → x = 9 buckets of cement.
  • A recipe calls for a 2:3 ratio of sugar to flour. You have 4 cups of sugar. For the correct ratio, you need 6 cups of flour (2:3 = 4:6).

Pro Tips

  • Ensure both terms of the ratio are in the same unit before simplifying.
  • When scaling ratios, always multiply or divide both terms by the same number.
  • For three-part ratios (e.g., 1:2:3), the calculator can simplify using the GCD of all three numbers.
